Fairfield is the county seat of Solano County and hosts a population of approximately 110,000 people. It is situated in Northern California on the north-eastern part of San Francisco Bay. The city has a very convenient central location, with both Sacramento and San Francisco being roughly 38 miles away. Fairfield was named by Robert H. Waterman, a clippership captain, in 1859 after his hometown in Fairfield, Connecticut. Less then 18 miles away from Fairfield is Napa Valley and about 24 miles away is Oakland. The Carquinez Bridge and the Benicia Bridge are also located nearby. (15 and 13 miles, respectively.) Suisun City shares a border with Fairfield. Other cities within a reasonable travel distance are Vacaville, Benicia, Napa, and Vallejo.
Suisun Bay is located due south from the city and San Pablo Bay is located to the southwest. Inside Suisun Bay is the largest saltwater marsh on the West Coast, the Suisun Marsh. Sacramento Valley can be found to the east.
Fairfield economy is varied, with an assortment of industries in government, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, professional and commercial construction sectors. Several well known businesses are located here, such as Clorox and Jelly Belly. Anheuser-Busch has a Budweiser brewery located here, and Fairfield is also the home of the Travis Air Force Base.
In 2008, the economic output of the Vallejo-Fairfield area was 13.340 million dollars, based on the GDP at the time. After the inflation adjustment, (the real GDP) the economic output is thought to be closer to $10,151 million.
Construction is currently the largest industry in Fairfield, producing 5.8% of the economic output ($776 million). Wholesale trade ($555 million) and Financial/Insurance ($467 million) are the second and third largest industries. The professional/business services sector created the most income in 2008, with a total of $989 million. After that was the transport and utilities sector (at $497 million) and the leisure and hospitality sector at $424 million.
