Who came up with the idea of JLG Forklifts?
The company is the result of an idea that came to its founder, John L. Grove, when he was on a trip along with his wife Cora, visiting old business associates. He stopped over at the Hoover Dam and by a stroke of coincidence, happened to watch two workers getting electrocuted on the scaffolding. This event motivated Mr. John to work on a product that would allow people to perform construction and maintenance functions in a safe setting, while in the air.
Mr. John formed a partnership with two other friends to set up the new business venture. A metal fabrication unit was set up in McConnellsburg in Pennsylvania, with 20 employees on payroll. The first JLG aerial work platform was manufactured and sold in 1970. Most of the design elements used at that time continue to be used today.
